Dempster Highway

Travelling Along the Dempster Dempster Highway Dempster Highway SymbolThe Dempster Highway, stretching from Dawson City to Inuvik, offers some of the most beautiful wilderness scenery in the world and a rare opportunity to drive north of the Arctic Circle.  The highway passes through two mountain ranges and crosses the Arctic Circle and the continental divide on its way to the Beaufort Sea.

Plan you trip for June through September for warm weather and 24 hour daylight.  There are plenty of opportunities for hiking north of the treeline, with spectacular views at the Arctic Circle and the Yukon/NWT border.  If you travel in September - October, you'll see part of the Porcupine caribou herd migrating across the highway to their winter or summer range.

Winter travel is sometimes interrupted by storms, but on a clear night, February through April, the northern lights, aurora borealis, are at their best.

Be sure to check at the visitor centres in Dawson, or in Inuvik, for the latest road conditions.
